July 22, 1931, was a special day in the history of Vancouver International Airport (YVR)—the day its doors were officially opened by B.C. Premier Simon Tolmie as a gateway to the world. More than 55,000 people attended the four-day open house celebration and airshow, featuring the Trans-Canada Air Pageant, the Aero Club of British Columbia and the U.S. military.
And 2023 marks YVR’s 92nd birthday.
In 1931, YVR was a single runway, a small wood-framed two-storey administration building, two concrete hangars, a floatplane harbour, and a control tower. That building, with many renovations and enhancements since, is the South Terminal.
Today, Vancouver International Airport is Canada’s second busiest airport and a trailblazer in the global aviation industry.
