Females interested in learning more about the Canadian Coast Guard and its career opportunities will have the occasion to do so at an inaugural hands-on-experience event—Operation: This IS You!—to be held at the Coast Guard’s Sea Island base at YVR on Saturday, October 14.
The event is the first in a series of hands-on-experience events being organized by the Achieve Anything Foundation, a federally incorporated not-for-profit organization with a mission to inspire female leaders to pursue STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) and STEM-based fields such as Aviation, Aerospace, Marine & Defence.
Achieve Anything Foundation events are being hosted by the Coast Guard and other agency and industry partners keen on improving gender diversity within their organizations and promoting opportunities for women in what many still perceive as “non-traditional” fields.
From assuring Canada’s marine safety and security, to protecting marine ecosystems and scientific research, there are many interesting career opportunities available in the Coast Guard for women.
Activities at the October 14 event will include tours of base duty stations, an interactive search and rescue exercise, dive demonstration, educational games, firehose challenge and a ride to sea in a hovercraft.
The hands-on-experience approach has proven successful for the Achieve Anything Foundation’s signature event, The Sky’s No Limit – Girls Fly Too!, held annually during the week of International Women’s Day. Since 2012, the family-friendly, free event has grown from 1,500 to 15,000 participants, with 20,000 expected in 2018.
